Playing Ace-King in Texas Holdem

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 31st, 2008

Everyone who plays Texas Holdem knows that Ace-King is one of the very best starting hands. But, it is just that, a starting hand. It’s only 2 cards of a 7 card equation. In nearly every situation, you want to come out firing with A-K as your hole cards. (The exception would be when faced with a big raise from an early position bettor.) When the flop comes, you need to reassess your hand and think things through before you just assume your overcards are best.

Like many other situations in Texas Holdem, knowing your opponents will help you gauge your situation when you hold A-K and see a flop like 9-8-2. Since you bet preflop and were called, you assume your opponent is also holding good cards and the flop may have missed them as badly as it missed you. Your assumption will often times be correct, but they could be holding a pocket pair and be leading in the hand, or worse yet have pocket 9s, 8s, or 2s. Also, don’t forget that many poor players wouldn’t know good cards if they tripped over them and could have called with A-x and paired the board.

If your opponent checks, you could check and see a free card or make a bet and try to pick the pot up right there. If they bet, you could raise to see if they are for real or fold. What you want to avoid is simply calling your opponent’s bet to see what the turn brings. If any card other than and Ace or King hits, you won’t know any more information than you did after the flop. Let’s say the turn brings a 4 and your opponent bets again, what do you do? To call a bet on the flop you had to think your hand was the best, so you must surely think it still is. So, you call a bet on the turn and one more on the river to find out that your opponent was holding 10-8 and only had second pair after the flop. At that point, it dawns on you that a raise after the flop could have won the pot right then. Instead, you called and lost 3 more bets in the hopes of catching a miracle card or that your Ace high would hold up. If you would have raised on the flop and been called or reraised it would have only cost you 2 bets to learn more about the strength of your opponents hand.

Ace-King is a beautiful thing to see in your hole cards. Just be sure you play them wisely and they can bring you great happiness at the poker table.

Horseracing: Basic form reading checklist/Betting guide

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 31st, 2008

Horseracing: Basic form reading checklist/Betting guide

This is a basic form reading checklist, most of you will already have your own techniques, but hopefully it may help you take some cash from the bookies in the future.

If you are looking up form for a particular race there are a few things to look for first. We recommend making a checklist to use for each race you study, your checklist should have the following questions:

1. Have any of the horses in todays race ran over todays distance?

2. Have any been successfull at that distance? of those that have, was it recently?

3. Were any of todays horses in that race?

4. What weight did they carry?

5. When the horse was successfull, was it carrying the same jockey on board?

6. Is the trainer on form with his other horses?

7. What was the state of the ground or the going?(in relation to question 5)

8. Are todays conditions the same as then?
(in relation to question 5)

9. Are his rivals any better off at the weights and have those horses ran since and improved?

The list could go on and on, but this gives you a rough idea, try to use only the factors that you understand and more importantly use the factors that you believe are important to the outcome of the race.

Also may be worth avoiding big fields where possible. I prefer eight or nine runners. Ideally you want the regular jockey on board and some sort of recent success.

Go for as higher class race as is on offer for that day, as the better the class, the more consistent they are likely to be.

Handicaps are a nightmare to try and work form out on unless you pick up on one that has just won its first comfortably and you can follow till it loses.

If a selection runs well but doesn’t win, dont give up on it, consider following it again, especially if it keeps the same pilot. And finally once you have chosen your pick, watch the markets to see if you are not alone in your choice. Hope that helps a little & Good luck

Happy Trails: Choosing the Best Hiking Boots For You

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 30th, 2008

It’s thrilling to picture yourself trekking through trails in the hills and mountains, taking in the crisp air and all of the nature around you, but before you get wrapped up in the dream of a hiking trip, make sure you have the right pair of hiking boots to get you through the reality of it. There are several key factors you should consider when choosing a pair of hiking boots, and they can make all the difference in your hiking experience. The wrong pair of boots can cause your feet to ache and blister, which will make your trip far less enjoyable. Choosing the right pair of boots will ensure that you will be comfortable while you are hiking and that you will get the most use out of your boots.

Always try on a pair of hiking boots before you purchase them. No matter what a manufacturer boasts, each pair of hiking boots will affect individual people differently, and you want to make sure you are wearing a pair of boots that will fit properly and give you the most comfort. Bring the socks and any orthopedic insoles that you intend to use while hiking so you can be sure your boots will fit properly during your hike. Also, it is a good idea to test the boots out on an incline before purchasing them, as this will give you a more realistic idea of what it will be like to wear them while you are hiking.

Hiking boots are designed for specific types of hiking. Boots designed for lightweight hiking will focus most on comfort and ease of use, while boots made for extensive backpacking trips will be designed for durability through harsh conditions and rough terrain. The materials and treads of a pair of hiking boots will support the type of hiking for which it was designed.

Boots made of nylon mesh and split-grain leather are lightweight and breathable. These are designed for comfort on lightweight hiking trips of no more than one or two days. Hiking boots of nylon mesh and split-grain leather are easy to break in and are usually very affordable.

Hiking boots constructed of full-grain leather are the most durable hiking boots on the market. These are designed for regular use on rough terrain, although they will also prove just as useful on lightweight trips. Typically, boots made of full-grain leather will need a period of breaking in before they are actually used during a hiking trip.

Keeping your feet comfortable and dry is the ideal function of your hiking boots. You never know when you may need to trek through a creek or if your trip may suddenly become rainy. This is why water resistance is an important part of the construction of your hiking boots. Many hiking boots are treated to be waterproof, but the best hiking boots are also specially constructed to resist leaks. Many boots also offer waterproof liners that offer an extra barrier from the elements. These liners work well, but they may wear out over time and need to be replaced.

Always trust your instincts when choosing a pair of hiking boots. Purchase the pair you feel most comfortable with, and you will be sure to get the most out of your hiking experience.

Golf Vacation Schools – Choose the Perfect Golf School Vacat

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 29th, 2008

Golf Schools, like golfers, come in all shapes and sizes. Don’t make the mistake of attending any golf vacation school. Do your homework and find the right match for your personality, learning style, and golf game.

How do you decide which golf school vacation is right for you? It’s simple. Start by asking yourself a few questions.

What is your goal or commitment level for your golf school vacation?

Allow me to simplify the above question. Are you planning your vacation around golf school or is golf school only a part of your vacation?

Some schools demand your entire focus both mentally and physically. Others are a bit more relaxed leaving you the time and energy to do other things. You must first decide if you are more committed to the golf or enjoying the vacation.

If I’m planning on attending a Las Vegas golf school or traveling to Myrtle Beach for golf instruction, I definitely would like to spend some time enjoying the surroundings.

If you feel the same, look into a school that offers half-day instruction. Develop your skills in the morning, enjoy a nice lunch (usually part of tuition), then hit the golf course, casinos or the beach during your afternoons.

Are you new to the game or an experienced golfer?

Beginners should investigate schools that offer low student-instructor ratios. A 4:1 ratio or lower is optimal for beginning golfers. You might also want a school that limits class size.

Experienced golfers should make sure the school they attend offers on-course instruction. Your swing might need some tweaking but, unlike a beginner, you should really get instruction in game-like scenarios.

Depending on your learning style, you might still appreciate the attention offered by low student-instructor ratios. This is more of a personal learning style preference than necessity for the experienced golfer.

Do you have a low handicap but your golf game collapses from 150 yards in to the pin?

Find a school that focuses on skills like the short game and course management. If your golf swing is working for you, don’t pick a golf vacation school that dedicates the majority of instruction time at the driving range.

The market is very competitive. In order to distinguish themselves from the competition, many golf vacation schools are beginning to focus on niches or individual aspects of golf. Shop around and you’ll find a golf school that will help you shave a stroke or two off your already low handicap.

There are many other questions you should consider before reserving your spot at a golf vacation school. Will you need lodging? Are meals included? Does the cost of school include rounds of golf? You can find a wealth of information on how to choose from the many golf vacation schools at http://www.PerfectGolfVacations.com.

Focus your energy on the above three questions first. Narrow your choices to three or four schools. Then choose the golf vacation school that has all the amenities you desire on your trip

Golf Training Programs For Women

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 29th, 2008

Golf training programs designed to help condition the body for better golf have really taken off in recent years. Male golfers have not been the only beneficiaries. Many women golfers have also taken full advantage of what must be the most effective ways of improving one’s golf game.

Lady golfers have not been afraid to use weights so as to be stronger for golf and to strengthen their golf muscles. Many men still dread golf exercises believing that they are too rigorous or that the weight training will make them stiff with overgrown muscles.

Golf training programs, like any other sporting programs have underlined the fact that the stronger a person is specific to their sport, the better they will tend to perform.

The fear of developing huge muscles is no longer there because it has been replaced by knowledge an the facts. Which are that muscle-building and strength-building exercises are very different things and there is no way a person can develop muscles when they are in a golf training program that is designed to increase strength in their golf-specific muscles.

The results of involvement in a golf training program are usually clear for everybody to see on the course. Lady golfers involved in golf training programs are hitting longer drives and more consistently. Everybody involved in a golf training program is performing on a much higher level than those who shun golf exercises.

The result is that women golfers are no longer the brunt of jokes and extremely high standards and amazing performances are now very visible. Good golf training programs have made all the difference.

FLAX SEED OIL AND WRINKLES

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 27th, 2008

Flax seed oil helps lubricate the digestive system and softens the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Flax seed is packed with oils, fibers and protein that supply your body with essential fatty acids (EFAs), notably omega 6 (linoleic acid) and omega 3 (linolenic acid) fatty acids. Your body uses EFAs through hormone production, the metabolism of vitamins and protection at the cellular level. The lignans from flax seed hulls help control blood sugar and insulin, thereby reducing the risk of diabetes. Flax seed oil has also been shown to be helpful in reducing “bad” cholesterol. Deficiencies in EFAs have been found to be associated with eczema and dry skin. Some women have also found flax seed be helpful to in relieving hot flashes associated with menopause.

According to the Health Sciences Institute, the most effective and inexpensive way to eat flax seed is to grind it fresh and add it to cereal or juice. This is when the flax seed oil and fiber is the most potent (it starts to lose potency when exposed to air), and so you get the most benefit. Flax seed has a mild, nutty flavor and is much more palatable in the ground form than straight pressed flax seed oil. Further, one quarter cup of ground flax seed is the equivalent of 17 flax seed oil capsules, so there is substantial savings.

Resources:

You can find fresh whole flax seed at health food stores and natural grocery stores such as Whole Foods. You can also order it on line from companies such as Stevens Farm, which grows its own flax and cleans and grades it for human consumption.

Factors to consider when selecting a Fish Finder.

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 25th, 2008

Select Fish Finder that right for you!

There are four facets to a good sonar unit:

* High power transmitter.
* Efficient transducer.
* Sensitive receiver.
* High resolution/contrast display.

All of the parts of this system must be designed to work together, under any weather condition and extreme temperatures.

High transmitter power increases the probability that you will get a return echo in deep water or poor water conditions. It also lets you see fine detail, such as bait fish and structure.

The transducer must not only be able to withstand the high power from the transmitter, but it also has to convert the electrical power into sound energy with little loss in signal strength. At the other extreme, it has to be able to detect the smallest of echoes returning from deep water or tiny bait fish.

The receiver also has an extremely wide range of signals it has to deal with. It must dampen the extremely high transmit signal and amplify the small signals returning from the transducer. It also has to separate targets that are close together into distinct, separate impulses for the display.

The display must have high resolution (vertical pixels) and good contrast to be able to show all of the detail crisply and clearly. This allows fish arches and fine detail to be shown.

Factors to consider when selecting a transducer:

When trying to determine which transducer is best for you, you’ll need to consider the following variables:
* What material the transducer housing is made of, based on boat hull composition
* How the transducer should be mounted on the boat: in the hull, through the hull, or on the transom
* What you want to see displayed: depth, speed, temperature, or a combination

Composition
The first step is to determine what material the transducer should be composed of.

Exercise the right way – one-arm dumbbell rows

Posted in Athletics etc. on the October 24th, 2008

Other articles in this series looked at a number of exercises, mainly from the perspective of developing a comprehensive muscle building program. Sometimes we take things for granted, especially when it comes to performing the basic exercises that constitute the core of most bodybuilders’ training regimes.

It is useful, therefore, to describe in detail the processes involved in actually doing these exercises. This will help beginners to start out using the correct techniques before moving on to potentially more dangerous heavy weights. If it also helps more experienced lifters to redress some of the little faults that have almost imperceptibly crept in over the years, all the better.

In this article we’ll take a close look at One-Arm Dumbbell Rows.

MUSCLES TARGETED: latissimus dorsi, trapezius (mid), biceps brachialis

STARTING POSITION

Grasp a dumbbell with an overhand grip and palm facing body.
Rest your opposite knee on a flat bench.
The supporting leg should be slightly flexed with the foot flat on the floor.
The back should remain straight, parallel to the floor.
The dumbbell should be held at arm’s length.

EXERCISE TECHNIQUE

Pull the dumbbell upward in a straight line with the elbow kept close to the body.
Lower the dumbbell slowly to the starting position.
Repeat this movement until the intended number of repetitions have been completed.
Repeat on the other side.

OTHER EXERCISES WORTH CONSIDERING

Other exercises that tackle these muscles include Bent-Over Barbell Rows (mid trapezius), Chin-Ups (upper trapezius) and Lat Pull-Downs Behind the Neck (upper trapezius).

Graduation Keepsakes

Posted in Education, Rags on the October 24th, 2008

What Are They And Why Do We Have Them?

Graduation keepsakes today may be different from those of yesteryear, but still signify essentially the same thing. They are a gift or souvenir that relates to the accomplishment of graduation form either grammar school, high school or college.

Throughout the years, boys and girls, men and women, have enjoyed the ceremony of graduation. Graduation from grammar or high school in the United States is often marked with a large party. The graduate gets plenty of gifts from friends and relatives. College graduations are always a bit more subdued than those for the younger people are.

During the early part of the last century, young people often did not attend high school. Graduation from grammar school was considered quite an honor. If a family had money, they would send children to high school graduation gowns. In many cases, however, the children went on to work and help support the family.

In 1910, popular graduation keepsakes for those graduating grammar school included the following:

School Photo

Fountain Pen

Diploma in leather cover

Today, when speaking of the most popular graduation keepsakes for boys and girls graduating grammar school, we think less of gifts and more of different things that mark their years in grammar school. These include a school yearbook, a diploma frame with an attached pen and autograph books or autograph animals.
