T-Mobile Position Strengthens Ahead Of Merger

Posted in Consumer World, Tech Life, Telecommunication Parlor on the October 29th, 2009

Consumers seem to be finding Deutsche Telecom’s UK arm T-Mobile an attractive proposition once again, ahead of its expected merger with Orange. This changing trend was revealed by the record subscriber growth shown by the mobile operator in the month of September this year. About 100,000 new connections were taken up, according to figures released by the company.

Richard Moat, CEO of T-Mobile UK, confirmed the increase in the company’s subscriber base and added that the company’s immensely popular new offer “Free Texts for Life” had a significant role to play in this dramatic change of fortunes. This scheme witnessed a revival of interest in T-Mobile’s products and translated into growth of customers – both the ‘pay as you go’ kind and the long-term type. The “Free Texts for Life” scheme was marketed vigorously by the company.

Earlier this year, the news of a merger between France’s Orange and T-Mobile took the industry by storm. The merged entity is expected be the largest mobile broadband operator in the UK, and would by dint of its sheer size and purchasing clout control the fortunes of the market to a large extent. Critics and industry analysts have predicted that should such merger take place, the existing competitiveness in the mobile market, which had been ensuring even pricing and periodic enhancements, will cease to exist.

T-Mobile’s last growth spurt was in December 2007, and even this has now been surpassed. The increase comes as a bonanza for T-Mobile, which will now be able to drive a hard bargain in its negotiations with Orange that had been toying with the idea of acquisition instead of merger.
